Sport is a means of communication that does not require language. It works on contact cooperation, respect and silent dialogue.

Sport is a useful tool for relating and overcoming barriers, linguistic but also social, cultural, economic, even if there are structural barriers that are difficult to break down.

The various projects in which Gea Cooperative is involved aim to engage women, men, and foreign minors with refugee status, particularly using amateur sports. Access to sport, the cost of practicing it, the bureaucracy that prevents those with complex legal status from practicing, the time it takes to get to know the territory and the sporting realities, the time to play sports, the gender gap, are many obstacles that some people face more than others.

These are some structural obstacles that Gea Cooperative tries to counter by promoting social, cultural and sports activities in informal settings or by networking with grassroots sports realities in the city of Padua to increase opportunities for migrant women and men to play sports.

Not only on  June 20, a special date, but every day through projects and activities in the area. Gea creates moments of sharing that aim to bring positive messages both in sports and in society.

At the bottom of the article , find some photos of the pilot actions of the Erasmus+ project “INSPIRES. INtegration through SPort and Inclusion for Refugees in Europe On” to promote women’s empowerment, soccer and sports activity for migrant women. Some shots also from the Erasmus+ project “ONSIDE. Amateur soccer free of racism and promoting integration” concluded in 2022, which consisted of a series of training sessions and events to raise awareness and counter racism on soccer fields by promoting social inclusion among athletes of different backgrounds.

For a Europe that needs to work even harder on welcoming, including, and valuing migration. Funding projects like these creates opportunities and best practices to open reflections on the present and build future paths.

The pilot events promoted within the project Inspires which will be implemented by the Gea Social Cooperative have been inspired by the following good practices mapped by the developers in the previous phase of the project: “Futbol Mas Foundation” and “Bike Bridge”. The aim of these two good practices is promoting the improvement of technical sports skills, the knowledge of the territory and the exchanges with the community.

The first two meetings will involve refugee women volunteers and refugee women in two soccer trainings together with the grassroots football female team Quadrato Meticcio (already composed by players of different nationalities, mainly European). Women empowerment, social inclusion and cultural diversity are the main topics we will share about during the trainings.

The third and fourth meetings will involve cycling and/or walking to discover the playgrounds and parks with free sport facilities. Participants will also be given a map of the city with the mapped sports spaces.

The last event will be held at Sherwood Festival, in the area dedicated to sport, together with a conference where organizers and participants will share feedbacks, thoughts and ideas to enhance the experience led, to raise awareness and promote the practice of sports of women refugees and with migrant background.

More information on the dates of the events will follow soon.

Funded by the EU Erasmus+ Programme, INSPIRES is a joint project between the Fare network, GEA (Italy), ChoG (Germany),Organisation Earth (Greece), Monaliiku (Finland) and UISP (Italy).

Fare is looking to appoint six experts in refugee inclusion and sport as part of an EU-funded project INSPIRES.

The role of sport in social inclusion and integration has been recognised time and again, yet in many places access to sports for refugees remains limited. Often local sports organisations struggle with a lack of resources and knowledge on the needs and expectations of refugees. INSPIRES (INtegration through SPort and Inclusion for Refugees in Europe for Sustainability) aims to counter this.

INSPIRES has the goal of equipping refugees, key actors in football (coaches, referees, club administrators etc.), and civil society organisations with the skills and knowledge required to support the integration and social inclusion of refugees, particularly women and girls, across the European Union.

As part of the project, Fare is looking to recruit developers who will collect and edit good practices to be shared across the EU.

Role of the Developer

  • To identify good practice where football has been used by coaches and civil society organisations as a tool for the inclusion of refugee women
  • To author and edit the identified practices to be uploaded on an Online Platform
  • To support with additional information for the inclusion of good practices in the project handbook
  • To advise on the adaptability of the good practices for implementing in the project’s activities, e.g., at local piloting events

Person specification

The project partners are looking for six developers who:

  • are experts and practitioners working in the field of refugees and/ or sport (e.g., coaches, trainers, refugee organisations)
  • are proficient in English
  • have flexible working hours

The selected Developers will be subcontracted by Fare network and will receive 1000EUR as a fee. The estimated time commitment is 10-15 working days over a period of 12 months.

To apply please send a cv and letter of interest at: esther.jonesrussell@farenet.org Deadline for applications: 30 August 2021.

Funded by the EU’s Erasmus+ Programme, INSPIRES is a joint project between Fare network, GEA (Italy), Organisation Earth (Greece), Monaliiku (Finland) and UISP (Italy).

Fare network together with the REWINS partners: Organisation Earth, Polisportiva San Precario and Girl Power Organisation is proud to present the REWINS Training Course for sport organisations and coaches working with refugees.

The Training Course can be used to deliver seminar and training courses around the following themes:

  1. EU Health Enhancing physical Activity Guidelines (HEPA Guidelines),
  2. Addressing refugees/ Asylum seekers’ issues,
  3. How to approach women participants/ Gender equality issues,
  4. Strategies and methodologies to include people from different cultures in the sport activities.

The document offers detailed information on the themes, related good practices from Europe and non-formal educational sport activities around culture, identity, teamwork and cooperation.
Seminars for coaches working with refugee women were held in Greece, Italy, and Denmark where the four topics were discussed and further developed in the Training Course based on the feedback.
REWINS was a two-year project, funded by the European Commission under the Small Collaborative Partnerships grant focused on increasing participation of refugee women in football and
development of activities and material for coaches with working with refugees.
